Cultivating Summer Joy: the Satisfaction of Having a Garden
As I find myself in the full swing of the summer season here in northern California, I'm constantly reminded of the joy and satisfaction that comes from cultivating a small herb and veggie garden. For many midlife women like me, gardening is more than a hobby – it’s an experience that nourishes the soul, invigorates the senses, and connects us with nature in the most fulfilling way.
What an Aroma
One of the most gratifying aspects of growing your own herbs is the sensory delight it offers. The vibrant colors of ripe tomatoes and peppers, the earthy aroma of fresh herbs, and the satisfying crunch of a sun-ripened vegetable picked straight from the vine create a sensory experience that store-bought produce simply can't match. Each morning, as I step into my small garden, I am greeted by the sweet scent of basil mingling with the spicy aroma of peppers. This sensory feast is a gentle reminder of the simple pleasures that life has to offer. My small but mighty herb garden grows tarragon, basil, Thai basil, mint, lemon balm, rosemary, oregano, chives, dill, parsley, and several types of tomatoes, and peppers. With the temperate weather here in Marin County many of my herbs are year-round too.
A Connection to Nature
It can be easy to feel disconnected from nature. And gardening offers a meaningful way to reconnect with nature and provides a peaceful escape from the hustle of everyday life. There's something profoundly therapeutic about tending to my garden, watching plants grow from tiny seeds to flourishing plants, and knowing that I am playing a part in this incredible cycle of life.
The act of gardening encourages mindfulness, allowing me to be present in the moment and appreciate the beauty of nature's wonders. It reminds me to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor the sights, sounds, and smells that surround me that are right in my backyard and patio. A friend recently shared that spending the first 10 minutes of your day outside with your feet on the earth is one of the best ways to start your day and I do believe this is true.
Health and Wellness and Sustainability
Growing your own herbs, tomatoes, and peppers is not only satisfying but also contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Freshly picked produce is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that boost overall well-being. Whether it's a handful of basil in my Vitamix to make a classic pesto that I learned to make last summer, juicy golden tomatoes with basil, or fiery shishito peppers pan sautéed with olive oil and sea salt, I know I'm nourishing my body with the best that nature has to offer. And I am sustainable too by using what’s fresh and in my yard!
A Taste of Creativity and Accomplishment
Cultivating a garden is an opportunity to express creativity and experiment with new flavors and culinary combinations. As I cut herbs and vegetables from my garden, I find inspiration for new recipes and cooking adventures. From trying my hand at homemade salsa to crafting herb-infused oils, the possibilities are endless, and the results are always rewarding.
There is something incredibly satisfying about nurturing a plant from seedling to harvest. It's a testament to patience, perseverance, and dedication, qualities that many of us continue to cultivate in our midlife journey. Each ripe tomato or flourishing herb is a symbol of hard work paying off and a reminder that we can achieve things, both in the garden and in life.
Mint – easy and delicious
One of my favorite herbs to grow is mint. And this year I added lavender mint to the herb garden mix. I absolutely love using mint in drinks during the summer, where it adds a refreshing touch to every type of drink. With several varieties in my garden, I often find myself experimenting with different combinations. A personal favorite is adding mint to sparkling water along with tart cherry juice and a squeeze of lime for a refreshing twist or crafting a classic mojito for a cocktail in the evening. Mint's versatility doesn’t stop at beverages; I sneak it into all types of salads, from chicken salads to green salads, where it adds a burst of flavor and a refreshing aroma that elevates every dish.
Final Thoughts
Growing a garden, no matter how small, is a rewarding endeavor that offers a multitude of benefits. From the sensory delight of fresh produce to the profound connection with nature, the health and wellness boost, the creative inspiration, and the sense of accomplishment it brings, gardening is a fulfilling experience that enriches our lives in countless ways.
Whether you're an experienced gardener or a curious beginner, I encourage you to start your own small garden and discover the joy it can bring to your midlife life. Embrace the satisfaction of nurturing plants, savor the bounty of your harvest, and let the garden be a source of inspiration, growth, and happiness throughout your midlife journey.
